Digital Note Techniques for Investigators

Some tips from HistoryDA

The digital side of our note taking tips from our earlier LIVE discussion.

If you haven’t yet seen “How to Read a Book” episode discussing levels of reading by Mortimer Adler, it has the “analog” note taking tips that will increase your understanding of the material you are reading. Critical for investigators of all stripes.

However, what happens when there is a deadline and you don’t have the luxury of taking time with analog notes. Digital is the way to go and we explain some of the processes we do on the digital side, and how they match and differ from the process on the analog side.

The two notebook programs we discuss:

1. Evernote https://evernote.com/ (For non sensitive items)

2. Obsidian https://obsidian.md/ (For sensitive items)

The visual data organizer:

1. Markmap https://markmap.js.org/

And for those parents out there wanting these lessons for their kids, we are redesigning the “Think Like a Detective” program to include a newer kid friendly version in partnership with Aleria Everson. She is my daughter who I trained to be a PI as well and suggested a more kid focused format. She has more details at the end of the video.

The course for adults is being redesigned with an online automatic system but the old system sample is here if you want to take a look:
